I've been around for some time now and as we all know, some non-members (non-paying, that is) contribute a lot helping others (much more than paying members, if I may say so). Some of them are, moreover, in the KudoZ Leaders "Top Ten" list: I see Henry Hinds, hedcan, anita, for example. I think it would be nice to them that, somehow, we could see their pictures as "Featured translator", don't you think? I wish a nice W.E. to all of you. Juan. | | | Featured translator for members | Mar 10, 2006 |

I really don't think it's a fair thing to say. Take my example: I am not a very active member but I paid for using Proz.com and let's put it bluntly - this sort of contribution, the financial one, runs the whole store most of all, don't you think? So I don't think it's fair to say that some non-paying member contributes more than the paying one. How do you measure that? On the other hand, I wouldn't mind the most active non-paying members being featured on the main page. | | | KathyT Australia Local time: 09:45 Da Giapponese a Inglese Quite frankly.... | Mar 10, 2006 |
...if that was a service they wanted, they probably would have become (paying) members long ago. Or were you trying to say in a roundabout way that in fact you would like to see *yourself* featured, at no extra charge?

paying-members & non-paying members | Mar 10, 2006 |
I would not mind seeing non-paying members featured, either. Truth to tell I have never ever seen myself! I think that some people have more free time to contribute answering questions. I do it whenever I can. Perhaps some people can answer many questions because they are online almost all the time, perhaps they work online, I do not know. I must work, and not online. I would not take for granted that non-paying members contribute more than the paying ones. ... See more I would not mind seeing non-paying members featured, either. I think it’s irrelevant if one gets posted as “Featured translator” or not; it does not create any cash flow. Much better would be to create a “Champion terminologist” block (same layout as “Featured translator”) and rotate it among those who hold the top position in the various language combinations. | | | But they already are featured! | Mar 10, 2006 |
See the KudoZ Leaders box on the main page And they get far more than our 15 minutes of fame a couple of times a year (not that I'm complaining, those guys sure deserved it!). Warm regards to everyone, no matter how much you contribute! Joanna | | | Angie Garbarino Local time: 01:45 Membro (2003) Da Francese a Italiano + ... yes, agree Maria Luisa | Mar 11, 2006 |

Who is most likely to be a good translator, somebody who paid ProZ.com USD 120.00 or somebody who earned 30.000 KudoZ (the highest ranked non-paying member) by providing the translation of more than 7.500 terms? To deny such a member the privileges enjoyed by “Platinum Members” implicitly values his contribution to less than USD .016 per term! | | | I think we should refrain from speaking on their behalf | Mar 11, 2006 |
These members can speak for themselves _IF_ they feel they have been treated unfairly. Otherwise we might be doing them a disservice by stirring up a discussion they might not have wished for. Joanna | | | Dear Joanna, | Mar 11, 2006 |
I have made a constructive suggestion about how to deal with it:
"Much better would be to create a "Champion terminologist" block (same layout as "Featured translator") and rotate it among those who hold the top position in the various language combinations."
May I take the liberty to suggest that you discuss that proposal instead of writing meaningless platitudes?

Why do you refrain from answering it?
The current format of the "KudoZ Leaders" block makes it rather meaningless for promotional purposes since it contains no information about language pair(s). That's why I suggest a format change.
You write:
"I think we should refrain from speaking on their behalf."
I freely admit that I am speaking on my own behalf.
I hold the leader position in several language pairs and I am of opinion that I, and the leaders in all other language pairs, deserve a promotional advantage. ▲ Collapse | | | Uldis Liepkalns Lettonia Local time: 02:45 Membro (2003) Da Inglese a Lettone + ... Sven, my remark was a general one and was not directed at you. | Mar 11, 2006 |
If I understand correctly, Juan suggested that non-paying KudoZ Leaders be featured from time to time, just like the paying members are. But none of the said non-paying leaders has spoken as yet so we really don't know what THEY think about it, which, in my opinion is crucial here. KathyT might be right, perhaps they do not really care about being featured, but we can only speculate. As to your proposal, personally, I wouldn't mind top-ranked KudoZ answerers being additional... KathyT might be right, perhaps they do not really care about being featured, but we can only speculate. As to your proposal, personally, I wouldn't mind top-ranked KudoZ answerers being additionally featured in a Champion Terminologist block. Now, to answer your question- I don't think it's possible to decide who might be a better translator- someone who has earned many KudoZ points or someone who has paid for his membership but is not an active KudoZ answerer. Of course, being top-ranked proves extensive knowledge, but not participating in KudoZ does not mean that one is a bad translator but perhaps simply too busy or not interested. Also, I think it pointless to argue whose contrbution is more valuable- that of the people who help fellow translators with tough terms or that of the ones who pay for their membership, as they are both very important. Thanks to the formers, ProZ.com is such a great place but thanks to the latters it can exist at all. Joanna

Henry has explained it very clearly, and I quote: "Where I live, hockey players have "pickup" games. Maria Luisa Duarte wrote: So, in my opinion if you don't pay you don´t play. simple as that That is perfectly fair. I am not a member at present, and I would not expect to get the "perks" that a member has. Including things like "featured translator" status, instant points update, free access to all blue board records etc. In fact, it would not be fair on paid-up members if I got these perks before I decide to pay for membership. | | | Pagine: [1 2 3] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Non-members "Featured translator"?
