I don't normally take more projects or larger projects than physically possible to handle alone. Before the age of 40, I used to take larger projects. After 40, I refuse larger projects; accept smaller projects or middle-sized projects. I am not greedy about money. If I could earn enough money to lead my life, that is enough to me, even I could say "more than enough". I hate physical exertion. I don't want to strain both my body and brain excessively by accepting larger projects. Larger project... Also I don't want to delegate the larger projects to fellow translators. Because when it comes to translation, I am a perfectionist. I will try very hard to achieve 100 percent perfection in my translation work. I can't expect fellow translators to achieve the same kind of perfection. So I always avoid working with fellow translators or delegating larger projects to them. ▲ Collapse

I have taken from time to time some very large projects and I’ve also worked with other translators if needed. So, it depends on the project and on the client (I can’t say no to some of them). Although I know how to manage my time, I’m no miracle worker…

Of course not. It might occur that it turns out that I've accepted too much work, but that's never intentional.
And I'm not interested in outsourcing work. One of the more pleasant aspects of freelancing is only being responsible for your own mistakes, if any.

Over the years I became more and more careful about taking on more work than I can manage before deadline. I run slow when I am tired, and when I press too much I get migraines, when I simply cannot work reliably.
Good clients respect it if you tell them you simply do not have the capacity. Some can negotiate: I ask how long they can wait, and I look at my workload to see if I can rearrange my schedule.

It was normal to have a least a few 30,000 to 40,000 word projects and even an occasional 80,000 to 90,000 word project per year. However, you had a month or more to complete them. I would often be working on several large projects at the same time. In today's world, no one can wait, so sadly these projects get split into several pieces.

(mostly agencies) would like me to take on more than I can handle, for example urging me to take on a 3000 words job to translate for the next day when my schedule is already full. In these cases, we either agree on a later delivery or they'll have to pass the job on to someone else.
