El sector de la movilidad experimenta una transformación radical que marcará el desarrollo del siglo XXI. Debido a la transición energética, hoy somos testigos de vehículos alimentados por diferentes fuentes de energía, como la eléctrica, basada en motores de baterías o en hidrógeno. Ya que el sector automotriz está innovándose, ¿qué pasa con el sector de la infraestructura vial? ¿Está listo para recibir este tipo de vehículos y garantizar traslados autónomos y seguros?
Uno de los principales retos que enfrentan los vehículos eléctricos es la falta de puntos de recarga tanto en las carreteras como en las ciudades. Hay regiones o países que no sólo innovan, también invierten para transformar su infraestructura vial. A finales de 2017, China inauguró una autopista solar de 1 km en Jinan al sur de Pekín, la cual recarga vehículos eléctricos y genera energía para las comunidades aledañas1. Otro ejemplo, son las carreteras de carga automatizada que por medio de la inducción recargan a los vehículos eléctricos mientras viajan. El caso más reciente es el polígono de un kilómetro de longitud, construido en la autopista Brebemi de XXXX, que conecta la región de Lombardía, al norte de Italia.
China nos ha demostrado su potencial con el despliegue de 2,2 millones de estaciones de recarga, mientras que 18 estados miembros de la Unión Europa (UE) cuentan ya con 5 puntos de recarga por cada 100 km. En el continente americano, provincias como Quebec, en Canadá, lideran no solo la transición al uso de vehículos eléctricos (más de 100,000 circulando ya por sus carreteras), sino también con 3,000 estaciones de carga. EE.UU. no se está quedando atrás y, recientemente, los Departamentos de Transporte y de Energía, anunciaron una inversión conjunta por $5 billones de dólares para construir una red nacional de estaciones de carga que permitirá mayor accesibilidad para los autos eléctricos.
Translation - English Is highway infrastructure ready to power electric mobility?
The mobility sector is undergoing a radical transformation that will define development in the 21st century. Given this energy transition, today we're seeing vehicles powered by different energy sources, like hydrogen and battery-based electric engines. As innovations sweep the automotive sector, what's going on with the highway infrastructure sector? Is it ready to handle these kinds of vehicles and ensure safe, autonomous trips?
One of the main challenges for electric vehicles is the lack of charging points on both highways and in cities. There are regions and countries that are not only innovating, but also investing in the transformation of their highway infrastructure. In late 2017, China inaugurated a 1-km stretch of solar highway in Jinan, south of Beijing, which charges electric vehicles and generates power for adjacent communities. Automated charging highways that use induction to charge electric vehicles as they travel are another example. The most recent case is the 1-km long polygon XXXX built on the Brebemi Highway, connecting the Lombardy region in the north of Italy.
China has shown us its potential with the deployment of 2.2 million charging stations, while 18 European Union (EU) member states already have 5 charging points per 100 km. In the Americas, provinces like Quebec, Canada, are leading not only the transition to the use of electric vehicles (with over 100,000 electric vehicles already on its roads) but also with 3,000 charging stations. Not one to play catch up, the U.S. Departments of Transportation and Energy recently announced a 5-billion dollar joint investment to build a national network of charging stations to provide better access for electric automobiles.
