I have had some very bad ones in the past (although I have had one excellent employer as well).

A combination and... | Oct 16, 2014 |
... the freedom that comes with freelancing: I decide who I want to work with, what I work on, when I work, where I work. Most of all, being my own boss means that no one can deny my vacation plans or the raise I deserve! | | | John Cutler Spain Local time: 09:20 Spanish to English + ...
I'm in the tiny minority who answered "Learning new things". I guess I never grew out of the phase 4 year olds go through of being insatiably curious. Translating is a never ending source of acquiring new knowledge. | | | My unemployability is a given so... | Oct 16, 2014 |

Presumably because that would be possible for staff translators too, though admittedly not when I was one! | | | Serdar Usta Türkiye Local time: 10:20 Member (2010) English to Turkish + ... Actually you are the boss. | Oct 16, 2014 |
Yes, I know, technically it is the same thing, but sometimes I have to talk (or force) myself into the job. So, there is a boss. A correct phrase could be "no other boss!".

I have several. Every client is your boss in a certain way. Of course, they're not breathing on your neck all the time, but they kind of control your job. Some are pretty bossy | | | Flexible schedule | Oct 16, 2014 |
I replied "flexible schedule" because "doing work I enjoy" and "learning new things" is possible working in the office and a freelancer actually has a boss, many bosses. | | | Thayenga Germany Local time: 09:20 Member (2009) English to German + ... The combination | Oct 16, 2014 |
No "real" boss to breath down my neck, since it's pretty impossible to breathe down one's own neck. Learning new things at my own pace and when I have the time is one of the advantages of freelancing, whether it's studies on my own or taking a course, attending an event without haviong to wait till after duty hours or having to ask the boss if I could have time off for this or that. In case you ever want to learn how to do that, I can give you a few pieces of advice hehehe Jokes apart, I really enjoy being my own business. The motivation of working for myself only is - IMHO - already enough to avoid considering any kind of salaried position. Then, other things that come to my mind is deciding which projects to take on, setting my own schedule and being able to work everywhere. The only thing I don't really like is working alone from home, but still - it's worth it.

Family commitments means I can't always take on the same workload, and as a freelancer at least I'm not letting the company down. | | | Julian Holmes Japan Local time: 16:20 Member (2011) Japanese to English
