See more For the past 12 years I have made a decent career for myself as an interpreter. Now, I am interested in beginning to take on translation work. I have been researching available resources and updating my skills. Linguistically, I feel ready to begin taking on limited work. As far as technology is concerned, however, I feel out of my league. I am attempting to teach myself how to use Wordfast Anywhere, but I am stuck before getting started. I registered and created a TM for the appropriate language pair. Now, I see a screen where there is a "General" tab, and I am unable to get to the window where the tools are. I have checked out the tutorials, but they all seem either geared towards the paid downloadable versions of Wordfast, or assume that the individual has at least figured out this basic part. I may sign up for a webinar, but just wanted to see what I could teach myself first. I wonder where you see the 'General' tab? On my screen I see the following menu tabs: 'File' | 'Edit' | 'Display' | 'Tools' | 'Help' and a row of icons. The menu for each tab opens when you place the cursor over the tab. I have been unable to find anything labelled 'General'. Under 'Help', you should see 'User Guide', which is a guide specifically for Wordfast Anywhere. You can also access the guide using the following... See more I wonder where you see the 'General' tab? I used WordFast a few times myself, but it is full of bugs and the downloaded version of files are often partially corrupted with regards to formatting, and once I'm done with a translation the subsequent edits are often nowhere to be found in the downloaded document. As a result I can honestly not recommend WordFast Anywhere. A very good alternative that I often use myself (and it's free for freelancers) is Across (www.across.net). They also offer a very good user's manual and a free webinar once in a while (previous webinars can be downloaded for free). ▲ Collapse | | | Dragomir Kovacevic (X) Itália Local time: 10:31 italiano para sérvio + ... in case you have MS Word, use Wordast Classic off-line in your HD as well... | Feb 1, 2011 |
Michele, IMHO, you might start with Wordfast Classic instaled in MS Word, in case you use MS of course. It is free for small documents up to 500 segments or so. WfA is similar to it. Train yourself in WfClassic, with TM-s, glossaries, settings, do translate with it. This experience will approach you to WfA with a greatest skill. Hi Michele, I think you may be referring to the general tab that you see when you go to configure your TMS and glossaries. To set up your TMs and glossaries, go to File > TMs and Glossaries. Once inside the General tab, click Use my TMs and glossaries, and click on setup. Here is where you create your TM and glossary. Once you have done that, click ok. Then, click Save Settings. As Michael mentioned below, you can refer to the WFA online help here - http://www.wordfast.net/anywhere/WFA_help.htm Also, we conducted a webinar last month that gave proz.com members a basic overview of how to translate using WFA . You can watch the webinar here - http://www.proz.com/videos/cat%20tool%20webinars/584 If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to contact me directly. I will check out other CAT tools for comparison, as well as the webinar mentioned. Thanks again, Michele | | | Aude Sylvain França Local time: 10:31 inglês para francês + ... It is not a sophisticated tool, and not advertised as such, but I used it a few times with reasonably formatted Word docs and never had any problem (both on Mac OS X and Win7) Good luck M.! | |

They were concerned about the problems that I had experienced with their software and highlighted some improvements they'd made. I though this was very admirable of them. I did another translation in their online application and though there are still some minor bugs (that I will bring to their attention) the application seems to have improved markedly. Most notably, they now have the option to download bilingual Word files that can be edited and cleaned using Trados Workbench. Following this I can now withdraw my earlier caution and endorse both Across and WordFast Anywhere. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Wordfast Anywhere: Newbie feeling perplexed Protemos translation business management system | Create your account in minutes, and start working! 3-month trial for agencies, and free for freelancers!
