French term

...étape dans la route de la fonte qui expose...

French to English Other Tourism & Travel
Maybe it's time for a break, but I can't seem to get to grips with this sentence at all, from a tourist website:

Les communes de Montier-en-Der et de Ceffonds forment une étape dans la route de la fonte qui expose la production monumentale des usines métallurgiques de la région (Sommevoire et Val d’Osne).

Anyone undertand what they're getting at? Many thanks for any advice...

demonstrates ?

not sure what the problem is exactly, but "route de la fonte" (cast iron) est dans le même ordre d'idée que "Route de la Soie/Silk Route", en référence à l'industrie métallurgique de la région

Thanks Angela. Sounds correct, but I still don't really get the meaning of some of the French. How is "exposer" being used here, anyone?

tourist trail

Quite a French thing, I think - if this is foundry country, there will be a number of such places, so this is one step on the tourist trail locally. For those keen tourists who are interested in the history of metalwork.

hope this helps.

exposer - I'd use something general like 'puts on display', 'demonstrates', 'exhibits' or one of many other options. You 'expose' paintings in a gallery, for example.
Peer comment(s):

agree Joanne Nebbia : Think you could use "where you can see" rather than the direct tense translation of exposer in this context :)

agree Claire Cox : or maybe even industrial trail to get over some notion of the "fonte" - and perhaps highlights or focuses on for "expose"

We visited the same type of area in NZ in the old gold-mining region. There were stops and points of interest along the way. Here we have the wine route - route de vignobles.
