French term

lait de croissance

Could this be follow-up infant formula?

S'agit-il de lait en poudre ou non?

lait de croissance / follow on milk

It seems this product is not available in North America.

Two options: leave it in French with an explanation in parentheses.

I have also seen it called "follow on milk:

This site uses the term "lait de croissance" but explains it as such:
Supermarkets sell lait de croissance, baby milk for children 1yr+, in cartons or plastic bottles. Some need teats added

Here are some definitions:

Un lait de croissance correspond à un lait écrémé, dilué et sucré, enrichi de fer et d'acides gras essentiels visant à prévenir la carence en fer;

Yes Indeed. Baby Formula (infant formula)

Tout simplement

Thanks Vicky
disagree Tony M : No, because these products are NOT 'formula' to be mixed up, but actual bottles of 'real' milk, but enriched ADDED LATER: may well eb the case, but as far as I am aware, 'formula' specifically refers to POWDERED baby milk, doesn't it? These are liquids

enriched means formulated... The US market is full of Formula that isn't powder:::
disagree Anders G : No. This is the stuff you buy when they are thur with formula.

agree Sophie Raimondo : How about "infant growth milk then"?

Thanks, Sophieanne! Yes, I'm certain that at last 2 of the brands mentiond ARE 'actual' milk (I use the term loosely!)

Thanks, Hacene!
agree Anders G : We used to buy that stuff when we lived in Belgium: it is liquid, looks like milk, but they have added vitamins, minerals etc. The scary part is that it is not in the cool section... I think that in the US, it is equivalent to Vitamin D milk

Thanks, Anders! Not so scary, 'cos like almost all milk over here, it's UHT [= sterilized]

follow-up formula

As you said... absolutely, if it's powder... even if it is liquid, I believe it is formula if it is enriched. You can buy formula in the powder form or an already liquid form -Enfamil, Parent's Choice, Nestlé to name a few... You know it's formula as long as there are a bunch of things in it that are not just cow's milk...
Can you tell I'm still in formula-land ;-)
Peer comment(s):

agree sarahl (X) : still enjoying diapers?

Yes... diapers and bibs... for a beautiful little one, restless and strong as a horse ;-)
neutral PB Trans : This is still for babies (not past 18 months anyway). "Lait de croissance" is for children 1 to 3 years old. (http://www.nestle.ca/en/Products/Browse_by_Category/Baby_Foo...

lait de croissance

Looks to me like we're talking about a legal designation for a type of product. It should remain in French, possibly accompanied by English in brackets, but even this is not completely necessary, since the term is defined in the text. A translation alone will give false information.
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Good point, Vaughn! As it is originally in quotes, I'd leave it that way, with English explanation added as a Translator's note
