The determining characteristic of a C-gauge, as compared to other types serving similar functions (A-gauge, U-gauge, etc.) is the ratio of depth to width of the C-shaped frame. (A-gauges can measure wider parts but with less precision, U-gauges have limited depth but are more precise, C-gauges are most-suitable for parts of circular cross-section).
