French term

détartrage-surfaçage radiculaire

French to English Science Medical: Dentistry
Several possibilities for each word individually, but a comparison of ghits for the term in French with ghits for several of my attempts indicate that I haven't yet guessed the official term in English. (Nothing found in reference material for the term as a whole, nor for "détartrage-surfaçage" without "radiculaire.")

Context is an article on a study conducted to test the effectiveness of various treatments on periodontal pockets. Some of the treatments discussed involved "détartrage-surfaçage radiculaire" (the term comes up several times) while others simply involved normal oral hygiene (brushing/mouthwashing).

Sample sentence: "...est une différence importante avec certaines études faisant appel à des antibiotiques ou associant détartrage-surfaçage radiculaire et irrigation à la chlorhexidine."

Scaling and root planing is the most common and conservative form of treatment for periodontal (gum) disease. Scaling is the removal of calculus (commonly called tartar) and plaque that attach to the tooth surfaces. The process especially targets the area below the gum line, along the root. Plaque is more likely to stick to rough surfaces. For this reason, the root surface is smoothed down in a process called root planing. Root planing removes any remaining calculus and smoothes irregular areas of the root surface.

Plaque is a sticky substance, full of bacteria, that forms on teeth. When plaque hardens over time, it is called calculus.
