Vis sans fin

Following on from my previous question and having found the following "English" version of th source text:

www.jaycopack.co.uk/mak-labellers-rotary-unit.php
Feedscrew motorised and controlled by a brushless motor with the function of the container infeed gate lock device with torque control. Minimum maitenance: ...

Source text:
"Vis sans fin motorisée et contrôlée par un moteur brushless avec la function du conteneur porte d’èscluse dispositif d’alimentation avec contrôle de couple."

I had translated "Vis sans fin" as "worm gear", but should like to check whether "feedscrew" might be more appropriate.

This is a description of part of an industrial labelling machine in a PowerPoint presentation. The document has clearly been written by an Italian with limited knowledge of French, possibly poorly translated from Italian to French. This caption doesn't seem to make sense to me and I am wondering how to make sense of the whole caption, but this phrase in particular. The accompanying photo shows a small enclosure (presumably containing all the above) next to a narrow conveyor belt.

Discussion

Daryo Jun 28, 2012:
"feedscrew" is what it is in your case in your source text there is a mention of "dispositif d’alimentation", so it's a "vis sans fin" on its own, used for "feeding" i.e. a "feedscrew".

Also, you can see the "feedscrew" clearly at the beginning of the first video, feeding bottles into the labelling machine.

You have similar "feedscrews" inside some vending machine. When you select what you want, the "feedscrew" rotates one full circle and pushes one pack (of chips, or whatever) forward, where it falls in the "out" tray.

"worm drive" "worm gear" refers to assembly of two parts, one being a "vis sans fin" that is transmitting movement to the other part - not the case here.

Oh dear, this sounds like a bad name for a cocktail! Hope you find the correct term...

another example of feedscrew

Note from asker:
It is next to a conveyor belt that feeds the machine with glass bottles. Does putting glass bottles in a feedscrew seem like asking for trouble?
OK, looked at the video again and saw it. You are right!

Note from asker:
Thanks, that sounds as though it is probably more appropriate than "worm gear". Any ideas on my other question?

worm drive

A worm drive is a gear arrangement in which a worm (which is a gear in the form of a screw) meshes with a worm gear (which is similar in appearance to a spur gear, and is also called a worm wheel). The terminology is often confused by imprecise use of the term worm gear to refer to the worm, the worm gear, or the worm drive as a unit.
