French term

appréciation économique

French to English Bus/Financial Investment / Securities
Context: Lors de la distribution en Suisse, la SICAV peut verser des rétrocessions aux investisseurs qualifiés énumérés ci-après, détenant selon une appréciation économique des actions de la SICAV pour des tiers.

So far the second half of the translation reads:...the qualified investors listed below that hold shares in the ICVC for third parties...

What is meant by "selon une appréciation économique"? Is this some kind of economic appraisal or appreciation in value?

Any suggestions will be very welcome!

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Chris Hall

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

disagree joehlindsay : I have to disagree, as in my answer, 'economic appraisal' is used in cost-benefit analysis, this is about and investment fund. It should definitely be 'valuation'. That is the term invariably used in capital markets.

that refers to investors which in a business sense act for third parties even if they are fully legal owners of SICAV units

economically considered...

My reading is that this means qualified investors who may be economically considered to be holding units on behalf of third parties (irrespective of whether it is actually their name in the register of units or not).

My reading is that it means that fund managers will be paid commission in proportion to the investments they hold on behalf of third parties.

valuation

Appreciation in this sense just means establishing a price or value in finance. To get a sense of its use, read the Wikipedia and investopedia entries for "valuation".

The French adjective 'économique' is superfluous in English. You can just put valuation.

There are synonyms for 'valuation' in english: "assessment, appraisal, etc.", but the term 'valuation' is always used in professional finance relating to to investment instruments.
