I haven't quite got the geography of all this in my head (I should by now!) but it seems as if this duke had possessions to the north and to the south which would have been placed in contiguity - in continuity - by a conquest of Lorraine.

I agree with others that in principle there is no need to translate this term, but I feel it is there for emphasis.
I also feel that the cognates and similar terms proposed thus far work less effectively in English.
So, I'd say "(to link/join his northern and southern states/possessions/territories) without a break / without (territorial) interruption / in/as one piece", and such like.
