controlled, prescribed or hazard reduction burning, back burning or backfire
I think this is controlled burning of leaves, scrub, small growth etc to prevent it creating problems later. Back burning and backfire which seem to me to be a direct equivalent but used less often.

Francis Marche
: "prescribed burning" is "brûlage dirigé", a different concept and "feu de renvoi" is not a preventive measure.

Comment: "Thank you Jane. The FAO appears to use both the terms "back burning" and "back fire" frequently when talking about community agroforestry management techniques."

fire repellent
Think it should be " de renvoi", without the 'e';

Note from asker:
Thank you Oliver for the references, but I could not find any mention of fire repellents in your cashew reference. |

: A fire repellent is a material. "un feu de renvoi" is a fire.

French term (edited):
feux de renvoi
backfire
Check "backfire" in Termium: You'll find "contre-feu" and read the Eng and Fr definition of this F term. That's what "feu de renvoi" is.
