French term

mettre des bûches en élevage

Would you say the logs are "put into breeding" ? [in order to compare the abundance and diversity of saproxylic (beetle) species in these two types of stands].

Many thanks,
Karen

expose logs under controlled conditions

is what I get after a little reading of related literature. "Under controlled conditions" may or may not be necessary.
