French term

un choix unique par table

French to English Other Cooking / Culinary menu
Having had my brain scrambled by an esoteric job on art history, I'm having trouble finding the right phrase for this. I'm translating various menus for a restaurant, one of which is the Menu de Fin d'Année. Each course has three choices. Underneath it says:

Uniquement sur réservation.
Un choix unique par table
Budget : xx€ / personne.

Possibilité de choix multiples
Budget : xxx€ / personne.

Confirmation des choix 3 jours à l’avance par mail à : ...

So two options: either everyone at the same table eats the same menu, or they choose different items at a slightly higher cost per head. I feel there must be some sort of standard phrase for this but can't track it down.

Incidentally, I had something like this before with the client's general menu, where the phrase used was "Gamme de Menu identique par table. A partir de 10 personnes.", which I translated as "For groups of 10 people and more, we ask that the whole table orders the same menu" but something more concise is needed here.

(whole party must choose the same)

Always tricky this, and I have to say I've never really found an answer that I considered truly elegant.

Just found an alternative version of the FR expression on this web page:

http://www.hotelduparc87.fr/restaurant.html

« Choix d'un menu unique pour l'ensemble des convives »

(Don't bother to go, there, though — the food doesn't look very interesting!)

agree writeaway : yes, see this all the time on restaurant sites. they only serve a given menu if the whole table takes the same one. /reminds me of Tom Lehrer's 'we'll all go together when we go' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frAEmhqdLFs

Thanks, W/A! yes, it's common enough, isn't it, though I always think it sounds rather infra-dig to actually have to state it ;-)
agree Philippa Smith : As you say, not very elegant, but it says the right thing!

Thanks, Philippa!
agree Sandra Petch : So if I'm having tofu everyone else has to have tofu too, instead of foie gras ;-)

Thanks, Sandra! Errrm... I think somehow you might get left out of this party ;-)

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for 'party' - much better than 'table'. I felt this was actually a bit vague here (the same what some diners might ask....). Since two options are being given I went for 'same menu choices for all members of one party' and the for the more expensive option: 'option of choosing different menu items'. Thanks, everybody."

one set menu per table

meaning you have no choice: all at the same table get the same menu

neutral Tony M : That's right, but it's only half the story: the point is that the 'set menu' contains several choices, but the whole table must choose the same. / Also could lead one to think they all have to share a single meal ;-)

neutral kashew : With Tony's stipulation.

neutral writeaway : misleading way to say it. not very 'commercial'.

one menu item per course per table/for the entire group

A possibility.
Examples:
"Unless you have special dietary requirements, choose 1 menu item per course (for your group). "
"Please select one menu item per course for the entire group"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I don't think expreessing it this way makes it sufficiently clear that it must be the same menu item for everyone
