French term

AD

French to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Time reference
I'm translating the audio equivalent of "incrustations" for a corporate video to be followed by the visually-impaired. So when the film shows a bulldozer at work, the "listeners" to the video will hear "Shot of bulldozer working", or when they interview someone, "Close-up of Project Manager Joe Bloggs".

Each of these short texts is prefixed by "AD" followed by a number (e.g. 01.08) which must be a time reference for the video footage.

But what does "AD" actually stand for (and what is the English equivalent)?

TALIA.

Discussion

Martin Cassell Mar 29, 2009:
the joy of sigles of course, the same pair of letters can stand for all sorts of things, in both FR and EN: Action Directe, Active Directory, Aide à la Décision, Anaerobic Digester, Anno Domini (et j'en passe) ... these all seem just a tad less less likely, though, than Audiodescription
Melzie Mar 29, 2009:
company name or initials Hello, could this be part of the name of the company that made the film or the initials of the person who wrote the taglines?

audio description

Audio Description (AD) is a free and existing service that can transform the enjoyment of TV for people who have difficulty seeing what’s happening on the screen.

Like a narrator telling a story, an additional commentary describes body language, expressions and movements, making the story clear through sound. Experience clips of AD for yourself. "

Great FX! (can I call you "Special"? ;-) ) Thanks a million. There's really no point in not closing this now, but I'll wait the allotted 24h nonetheless.

Airworthiness Directive

This Airworthiness Directive (AD) is issued by EASA
Peer comment(s):

disagree French Foodie : An airworthiness directive is a notification to owners and operators of certified aircraft. Doesn't seem to have much to do with video footage...
