Used to measure bulk density of a powder. Can't find anything for volumenometer in conjunction with settle (and variations) or compaction, but have found a couple of examples of "powder volumenometer" in the context of bulk density. Can anyone confirm this is the right term?
DENSITE APPARENTE
Appareillage : Volumenomètre de tassage
Peser 50 à 100 ml de [produit à analyser] dans une éprouvette préalablement tarée. Noter la masse de la poudre (soit Pg) et le volume occupé dans l’éprouvette V0.
En déduire la densité apparente avant tassement.
D0 = Pg / V0

Comment: "Although this is more or less what Karen suggested, Liz did actually mention it first (among many other things!). Seems to get the most googles of all the variations offered. We'll draw a veil over 'gravimetry', which seems to me to be something completely different....
