French term

créées en standard comme fantaisie

French to English Other Botany Commercial flower varieties
In a cyclamen catalogue, talking about their varieties. Context: "Heureux d’innover sans cesse pour vous, nous vous proposons 23 raisons de choisir nos variétés de cyclamen XX **créées en standard comme fantaisie**." Does this mean that they are new standard varieties created as standard varieties? And does "comme fantaisie" have the idea of "imaginative" or "unusual"? Any help gratefully received!

Discussion

Yolanda Broad Apr 23, 2014:
Novelty I really like Miranda's "novelty" version.
Miranda Joubioux (X) Apr 23, 2014:
You have to remember that the F1 cyclamen is referred to as "standard", but that you can have 'novelty' (which is how I would translate 'fantaisie') in specific varieties of this cyclamen. http://www.norseco.com/pdf/Syngenta Brochure 2013-2014.pdf
DLyons Apr 23, 2014:

BrigitteHilgner Apr 23, 2014:
All our varieties are highly imaginative creations That's how I understand the sentence. I don't know whether the word "imaginative" is appropriate in the context - Tony's suggestion "fancy" might be suitable.
claude-andrew Apr 23, 2014:
Although there exist, as I'm sure you'll have found, varieties of cyclamen called "Fantasia", I can't help thinking that this just means "created for fun", the idea of a cyclamen grown as a standard being slightly over the top (actually I would have doubted that this is possible, but imaginative growers are constantly striving to delight gardeners)
Tony M Apr 23, 2014:
Comme Like you, I am slightly puzzled by the construction here, but wonder if maybe it needs to be understood as 'créées en standard comme [en] fantaisie'? In which case it would just be the standard meaning of 'comme', cf. the archaic EN in the Lord's Prayer "...on Earth as in Heaven"
Tony M Apr 23, 2014:
Fantaisie In many fields, 'fantaisie' is just 'fancy' — however, I don't know if this is a term used in horticulture, but that should be easy enough for you to research.

standard cyclamens, such as fantasia

"Miniature flowering cyclamen have small long lasting fragrant flowers and small leaves with attractive marbled patterns.
Standard cyclamen have large long lasting flowers with a slight fragrance.
There are also double and ruffled standard varieties."

Five years ago Morel launched its Fantasia cyclamen with white edged, thick petals providing a better shelf life.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Francis Marche : 23 varieties, either standard or fancy// That's exactly what it means: "en" is not to be necessarily repeated in such phrase and besides your interpretation clashes with the context (23 varieties)

I suggest you look at the grammar; what you suggest would have been "créées en standard comme en fantaisie".

both standard and fanciful

"Fantasia" is a proper name both in E and F.

"Cyclamen
Morel Diffusion introduced the fancy type ‘Dhiva Salmon’ to its Halios series, which already includes 16 colors and eight other ***fancy varieties***. A compact plant, ‘Dhi-va Salmon’ has large, striated petals that are rounded and arranged in a fan shape."

Peer comment(s):

neutral B D Finch : I don't think that any grower or florist would describe cyclamen is as "fanciful", which does not mean the same thing at all as "fancy". Also, note my comment on your "disagree" regarding your failure to note the grammar.

neutral Tony M : As BDF says, we wouldn't use 'fanciful' here, the proper term is 'fancy'
