français term

l'ambiance généraliste

français vers anglais Marketing Publicité / relations publiques
Hello

" l'ambiance généraliste " is on Internet and used for night clubs and discos but I can't really find a definition of what it means exactly or how to translate it

The full phrase is

Club à l 'ambiance conviviale et *généraliste*.

and there is no other context to help except that it is a 'private club'

The site is so discrete that I really don't know what services are on offer, if it is a night club or hostess bar

Thanks

Verginia Ophof Dec 16, 2013:
world music ?

Yes, I agree, it's something to do with the style of music - for example on this site:

It appears to refer to the music they play.

broad music policy, mixed playlist

Yes, it means that the music will appeal to everyone ie it's very mainstream. Possibly also the clientele will be of more mixed ages, rather than just young trendy types.

communal or family atmosphere

I believe the writer by having generaliste besides convivial wishes to convey a picture of family or community.

disagree Yvonne Gallagher : sorry, but it's a nightclub//it's a contradiction in terms and idea to say a nightclub has such an ambiance!

i wonder if you disagree if that expression cannot be used for a nightclub?
disagree mchd : not appropriate, it's a nightclub/Convivial ne fait pas référence à la famille !!

check up the context by the asker, please. 2. check up the word "convivial". it has a relationship to "familiar, cozy, intimate etc" which evokes a picture of family, communality etc. also see note to my answer. thanks
