Significantly for the novel, Bakhtin developed his ideas through a study of the European novel, which, he argues, is made rich by weaving together different languages and dialects, resisting 'official' and 'standard' language. Bakhtin argues that the language of the novel is, or should be, essentially dialogic (multi-voiced), compared with poetry, which tends towards the monologic (unity of voice).
Key concept here is that language finds its expression through a socio-linguistic context - meaning is not contained in the articulation of the individual voice. The voice of the individual carries with it the voices of others; language is charged with multiplicity. Double-voicedness (ambiguities) are not the result of misunderstandings but the result of socio-linguistic speech diversity.
