A gap crossing operation is a combined arms operation to project
combat power across a linear obstacle. The obstacle is linear in that it
creates a line crossing all or a significant portion of the area of

Linear obstacles are primary mobility concerns in modern land warfare and especially in offensive operations, whose characteristics of initiative and tempo are stymied by delays from natural or man-made obstacles. Accordingly, the U.S. Army has produced doctrinal manuals for overcoming them. Gaps are “linear obstacles or gaps … natural and man-made, wet or dry” and variable in size.7 They are below grade and differ from above-ground complex obstacles like walls, which are not crossed but rather breached. A gap crossing is “projecting combat power across a linear obstacle.”
