Dutch term

zaadvermeerdering

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Agriculture
Bijv.:

Proposed translations (English)

@Barend: ben ik mee eens

general vs specific / macro vs micro There are two types (major) of seed production ie. varietal and hybrid

Seed production based on the type of seed used for multiplication. The difference between varietal and hybrid seed production are as follows

Varietal seed production

It is single parent multiplication

Hybrid seed production

It needs two to many parents

etc

Michael Beijer Apr 13, 2017:
@anyone who might know this: Is there actually a difference between "seed production" and "seed multiplication"?

For example, on the website: http://www.dixonseed.com/seed_production.php , they state:

"Located in Glenn, California, Dixon Seed provides a wide variety of Open Pollinated and Hybrid vegetable seeds to domestic and international customers. Our seed production, seed multiplication and seed conditioning services ensure a reliable source of seed year after year. We are currently multiplying seeds in the following species: Beans, Beets, Cucumbers, Hybrid Squash, Leeks, Melons, Okra, Onions, Pumpkin, Squash, Sunflowers and Watermelon."

just added what Huitenga has on vermeerder/en/ing I am VERY happy that I decided to digitise these two treasure troves. I have them on my PC as searchable PDFs, plus integrated into my termbase software
Emma Rault (X) (asker) Apr 12, 2017:

production

to answer your question:
IMO production is fine when it comes to seed. For plants, it would be propagation and not multiplication.

agree Kitty Brussaard : Another good option, although a slightly more ambiguous one than 'seed multiplícation' as it may also refer to the biological process of seed production in plants as such. / OK, thanks for sharing.

Thanks, point taken, but multiplication does not sound right. I do a lot of work in this field and I've always been told to use production.

"Seed multiplication

Farmers are encouraged to take up seed production by being provided with seeds for this specific purpose. Most often, these seeds are sourced from the community seed bank. Interested farmers then multiply these seeds to return to the bank, which distributes them to members outside the community or village, with profits from the endeavour being used to expand the seed bank.

Seeds produced are also sold through the farmers’ society of Janadhanya, which works in collaboration with community seed banks and farmers to further develop farmer initiatives within an area.

Seed multiplication is important in that it helps enrich the biodiversity of a local area by making available many indigenous seed varieties to farmers who hitherto had no access to the seeds. It is also an income generating scheme where individual farmers are compensated for their efforts in seed production."

Thank you for the ref! But how do you (or how does Huitenga) feel about "vermeerdering"/"multiplication" when talking about plants/material, rather than seeds?See my further comments about the term in the discussion box above.
