All the different 经变 of the Five Dynasties, Early Song, Tangut and Yuan have pictures woven into them showing scenes from real daily life; of ploughing and reaping, of marriage, of feasting and drinking, of playing chess, of wine making, of iron smelting, of music, of dancing. In particular the large-scale picture images of gongyangren and the inscribed names and titles from the Five Dynasties and Early Song are valuable materials for the research into the Guazhou Caoshi Rule in the history of Hexi.

即经变，亦称变或变相，广言之，凡依据佛经绘制之画，皆可称为“变”。敦煌经变画则通常指将某一部甚至某几部有关佛经之主要内容组织成首尾完整、主次分明的大画。经变在南朝时即已出现，据唐张彦远《历代名画记》，南朝宋袁倩画有“维摩诘变”，梁时儒童画有“宝积经变”。莫高窟有经变三十三种，持续时间长的有西方净土变、东方药师变、弥勒经变、法华经变、维摩诘经变，数量最多的是东方药师变。敦煌经变内容丰富，形式多样，除了佛经内容外，大量的社会生活内容在经变画中得到生动的体现。许多经变画技巧高超，堪称艺术珍品。
福田经变在现存敦煌壁画中只有两幅，但其形式、技巧和内容在艺术史上却具有重要意义。同时，福田经变的产生与消亡，也从一个侧面反映了中国佛教发展的轨迹。
