How do you tell 样本 from 样品 in a translation? Both terms appear in the same paragraph and are used in contrast to each other, there is little context except 样本值（样品平均值）。"Normal sample" for 样本 and just plain "sample" for 样品? or is there a better way to do this? Also how about using sample for one and specimen for the other?

As I know, 样本 is usually used in Taiwan for sample or specimen, and 样品 is usually used in mailand. for the same word.

Nowadays, some people in mainland also use 样本. As to why 样本 and 样品 appear at the same time in your text, it is unlikely that the inconsistency was not made on purpose. I think you should make them consistent in English, either using sample or specimen.

As NKWong pointed out, the 样本值 and 样品平均值 in this text are statistic terms. So, "Sample" should be used instead of "specimen".

: Yes, I think they are actually just the same thing... but in some cases of Statistics or Science (e.g. blood test), 样本 may be the obvious choice. 样品 suggests more a product (as in commerce). In Eng., you won't call a statistical sample a "specimen

样本和样品均可译为：sample or specimen，在汉语中也可看作同义词，但使用中有如下区别：
样本： 说明图表， 式样书， 条目，商品目录， 说明书， 新书样本， 指示表，样本簿；
样品： 展览品(供展览的样品)， 试样， 式样， 说明物， 典型原型。
