Chinese term

大学英语

Chinese to English Other Education / Pedagogy transcript
I translate a fair number of student transcripts from educational institutes at various levels.

xxx 技术学院学生成绩单
xxx 技术学校学生成绩单

大学语文 79、电脑基础 82、大学英语 69。

Purpose of translation: official assesment of Chinese education qualifications in New Zealand.

It seems that I cannot translate it as "College English" , as it may imply the qualification is at a level lower than it actually is. "College" in New Zealand means "High School".

"University English" seems not be a good choice either, as it may imply the qualification is at a level higher than it actually is.

Any other suggestions? thanks!

Discussion

Roddy Stegemann Oct 10, 2006:
Thus, you should determine the source before attempting to translate the text.
Roddy Stegemann Oct 10, 2006:
Unless the scores labelled 大學語文 and 大學英語 were obtained somewhere other than at 技术學院 or 技术學校, there should be nothing wrong with translating the term as College English. The presence of the word 大學, however, suggests that the scores were obtained elsewhere
Roddy Stegemann Oct 10, 2006:
Clearly the student received his credits from a college in the New Zealand sense of the word. We know this because of the words 學院 and 學校. Thus, any credits obtained from the school must be college credits in the New Zealand sense.

College English

据我所知,各学校开设的大学英语课程的英文名称一般均为“College English”,并且众多大学英语教材的书名也都是“College English”,大学英语四六级也英文名称为CET (College English Test)为名称。

agree chica nueva : should be OK. or just 'English'. IMO if the authorities are looking at many transcripts from China, they will know pretty much the standard course structure in the Chinese unis and technical colleges (and that it generally includes English)

Chinese term (edited): 大學英語

English for University-Bound Students

Many colleges (high schools) distinguish between students that are university bound and those that are not. So, it is very possible that university-bound students receive English language training that is different from that received by those who have no intention of entering a university. Thus, you may wish to consider something similar to the above target term.
