Thank you very much Lesley, your comments were of big help!
chica nueva Nov 21, 2006:
Although tremella is called 'white woodear', it is different species:
外研社:汉英词典:
木耳 = 'wood ear' Auricularia auricula
银耳 = tremella (Tremella fuciformis)
I seem to remember it even looks different and has a different texture.
chica nueva Nov 21, 2006:
Tremella is definitely used as a tonic. As a houseguest in China, we had it as a sweet dish (perhaps I had a cold) I was told it was 'particularly good for women'. Pregnant women? I am not sure.
chica nueva Nov 21, 2006:
雪耳 and 银耳 are used interchangeably here: http://www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&q=未经漂染银耳&btnG=Search&me...
chica nueva Nov 20, 2006:
it is not a plant as such, it is the way the plant has been prepared for culinary use. you have two terms here, 未经漂染(的)雪耳. hope this helps.

snow fungus

雪耳=银耳=Snow fungus (Tremella fuciformis, also known as white fungus or silver tree-ear fungus because it grows on tree trunks). It is off-white and opaque when soaked in water, not colorless. As a food, in both salty and sweet dishes.
