ِAt the beginning of the jet era, if anybody had said to me that they would build an aircraft that would take 400 passengers non-stop Sydney-Los Angeles, you'd have attempted to have them certified.

Someone talking about the great shift in aviation industry with big planes creation.

What he would say by "certified" here. You should certifiy the planes? Because he used "them" in the end.

Thanks in advance,

get the person officially certified as mad

It's a way of saying everyone would have thought they (= the person making such a claim) were crazy!

neutral Tony M : Not exactly in this colloquial meaning. It doesn't mean have them checked, but to get them declared "mad" and possibly locked away

Attest or confirm in a formal statement

The word that comes to my mind for "certified" is "fact-checking" because "You'd have attempted to have them certified" probably means "You'd have attempted to check their claim."

Yes, an insane claim.
Peer comment(s):

disagree B D Finch : No, when the expression is used this way in normal, idomatic English it means certified as insane.

Checked as mentally healthy

You can sense the irony.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : In fact, 'certified' in this colloquial sense specifically means 'certified NOT mentally healthy'
