Partly because titles of articles can be abbreviated as sentences in the text of the article cannot; but it doesn't seem essential to me anyway. The last time I was involved in studying the rules of English grammar was in 1947, so I can't remember why!

Thank you. Yes, that's good, but it would have to be "solid body of thickness increasing with time", to avoid using "with" twice. I like this version.

Thank you. Yes, "whose" applied to inanimate objects appears to be acceptable these days, it wasn't at one time.
