Marcel Duchamp had been trained as a painter.
He was a very capable painter in the Impressionist style, a very terrific painter in the Cubist style.
At the end of 1912 Duchamp decided "Painting is dead, I'm going to turn to different things."
1913 was the year that Duchamps made his first Readymade by putting an ordinary, store-bought bicycle wheel atop an ordinary store-bought kitchen stool.
What Duchamps said is, "It is my power of choice, it is my deed of making a selection, that makes a work a work of art."
One of the things he did in 1913 was re-imagine how long a meter could be.
He did so with the work of art behind me called The Standard Stoppages.
He called The Standard Stoppages a Readymade because it was it was a readymade idea that a meter is a given thing, so he was making a new meter.
It was just a Duchampian meter, and here's how he made it.
He decided to cut 3 threads a meter in length and then to stand with the 3 threads a meter above 3 canvases.
He then proceeded to drop each thread to the canvas below.
And he fixed each of the threads on the canvas, cut down the canvas into a rectangle, and pronounced these the new standard.
It was a work that was beautiful in its concept.
If you're going to make a new meter stick, you should use it.
It shouldn't be an abstract tool that you have sitting around.
The way Duchamps decided to put The Standard Stoppage to use was on an old painting that he had made several years ago and abandoned.
Tracing with his templates that he had made from the way the threads fell on the canvases, these very beautiful curvy shapes to grow kind of like this weird coral, calling the picture Network of Stoppages.
Duchamps remains, 100 years later, one of the most daring challengers of ideas that, a century on, we still hold pretty dear about what a work of art could be.

Source text - English Voiceover: There are currently two kinds of influenza vaccines available.
We have the flu shot and we have the nasal spray, also known as flu-mist.
So, let's talk about some of the differences between these two kinds of vaccines.
The most obvious difference between these two is the method of delivery.
So, the flu shot is given as an intramuscular injection.
This often occurs in the deltoid muscle and this happens because it's easily accessible and also there's a low risk of complication.
However, the flu shot is also able to be given in the gluteus maximus, although in these modules we only teach the deltoid method.
The flu shot can also be given as an intradermal injection, but again, we're only teaching the intramuscular injection in the deltoid.
The nasal spray is, obviously, sprayed in the nose.
So, that's the most obvious difference between the flu shot and the nasal spray.
The most important difference is the condition of the virus used in each vaccine.
So, the flu shot is sometimes called an inactivated vaccine.
We call it inactivated because the virus that's used in this vaccine is effectively killed.
It's not able to replicate inside of humans and as a result, there's no infection.
The nasal spray is sometimes referred to as a live attenuated influenza vaccine.
We use this word, attenuated, which means altered because the virus that's used in this vaccine is changed, although it's technically still alive.
So, the changes or the alterations that occur in this virus, make it weaker, so in healthy people, their immune system is still able to defend against the virus and produce antibodies.
In the future, if our vaccinated patient is exposed to a stronger version of the same virus, their immune system remembers how to defend against the virus and our patient is hopefully protected against infection.
