(1) How are you adapting to changes in the translation industry in recent years?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There have been significant changes in translation and interpreting in recent years.
For example:
- Translation memory technology has improved
- Machine transition is better and more widely used
- Translation management systems are more commonplace
- Projects are often shorter
- Project timelines are in many cases tighter
- Overall, volumes are up while rates may not be
- Quality expectations are higher
- Interpreting services may be delivered remotely rather than in person
- ... and so on.
In preparing to speak at the GALA conference in March, Henry and I are asking translators and interpreters to share information and experiences on how they have adapted, or are adapting, to these and other changes. If you have not tried this experiment yet, it is worth doing:
- Step back, and close your eyes (don't really close your eyes, please keep reading).
- Think of your ideal client, what they are looking for, what they might be paying attention to. Become your ideal client.
- Now open your eyes and go look at your profile on ProZ.com, or your profile anywhere you have a professional presence.
What does your ideal client see when they arrive at your profile? Does it speak to them, does it look professional, does it communicate why you are the right person for them? Or is it just OK?
